Can You Cook Haggis In A Slow Cooker

Don't laugh grin
I want to cook my haggis in the slow cooker.
Its a Halls* one, in the plastic 'chub'.
The recipes all say to wrap in foil, add water to half way up and leave to cook.

BUT - do I take it out of the plastic wrapper first (not the packaging, the inner bit)?

* other haggis brands are available!!

It ought to make it clear in the instructions. But if it doesn't, I think you leave the plastic on. Is it really plastic btw? I've got McSween Haggises for tonight, two meat and one veggie, the meat ones are in some sort of intestine bag, the veggie in some sort of plastic, and the veggie one you cook in the plastic.

Incidentally I prefer the veggie one to the meat one!

We'll be cooking our Haggis in the microwave, tastes the same and less hassle. I agree the veggie version tastes better but it's also full of lots unrecognisable ingredients so I'm having pork loin while everyone else has haggis!

I cooked three yesterday in slow cooker and have done same previous years. I 2/3 fill slow cooker with boiling water, throw in the haggis and put in on high for 2/3 hours. The haggis swells a little but will not burst, when removed it will shrink a little as it cools down. Last year I forgot about them and just before serving they were still in slow cooker, when at the table and my husband 'stabbed' it, it spewed out very gracefully over the plate. Slow cooker all the way for me smile

Snow get a macsween's veggie haggis - nothing scary on the ingredients there, just oatmeal, pulses and veg.

It also makes an amazing haggis hash!

Wilson I couldn't remember what it was that made me reject MacSween's veggie haggis I had to google, it's veg margarine.

When I see vegetable margarine on a list of ingredients I walk away, it's a substance I would not knowingly put in my mouth...it rings alarm bells because they haven't given me a breakdown of the margarine's ingredients which often means they aren't too proud of them - it leads me to suspect they're hiding trans fats in their recipe.

I could be wrong but I'm not fussed enough to try and find out, I'll be happy with my pork!

Fair enough. It's vegan, so I guess that's why they use marg instead of butter.

I've gone from not being bothered to - it's frustrating though because if they'd just give the ingredients for the margarine it would be less suspicious. I suspect they are wanting to keep the number of ingredients to a minimum because that's generally a good thing with shop bought foods, but on this occasion it has just backfired with me - probably no one else has noticed.

I thought you took the plastic off, don't want all the chemcials leeching into the meat.

I fry it with onions.
